PSC CORE MODULE
Advocacy And Communications Skills

Duration:
3 days (18 hours)

Format:
Workshop using practical case studies, small group work, feedback and written appraisals

Trainee numbers:
16 maximum, to comply with the requirements of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (SRA)

Objectives:
The objectives of this course are that trainees will be able to:

  • Use appropriate language
  • Listen, observe and interpret behaviour
  • Speak and question effectively
  • Open and close a case appropriately
  • Use a variety of questioning skills to conduct examination-in-chief, cross-examination and re-examination
  • Prepare and present coherent and persuasive submissions
  • Organise and present evidence
  • Identify and act upon ethical problems

Topics:
The course covers all topics required by the SRA, including:

  • Presentation skills
  • Professional conduct
  • Chambers advocacy
  • Case analysis
  • Opening and closing speeches
  • Examination-in-chief
  • Cross-examination
  • Trial advocacy

Case study exercises:
Exercises are based on a single set of facts / files and are developed throughout the course to cover:

  • Chambers applications (summary judgment, security for costs, etc.)
  • Examination-in-chief
  • Cross-examination
  • Civil trial

Outcomes:
The course meets the objectives prescribed by the SRA.

The success measures for the course are that trainees:

  • Improve their advocacy preparation and presentation skills
  • Enhance their ability to recognise and deal with professional conduct issues relevant to advocacy
