Trainees taking this course will be able to understand techniques used in:

  • Interviewing witnesses
  • Taking an effective attendance note of the interview
  • Identifying what should go into a witness statement
  • Drafting a witness statement
  • Instructing an expert and evaluating an expert’s report

Topics:

  • Obtaining and taking a note of information given by a witness
  • Identifying what should be included / excluded in the witness statement
  • Drafting the statement
  • Experts’ reports

Practical exercises:

  • Obtaining information
  • Identifying and evaluating what is key information
  • Drafting a witness statement
  • Drafting a letter instructing an expert

Outcomes:
The success measures for the course are:

  • Delegates understand the techniques to be used in obtaining and clarifying information given by witnesses
  • Delegates are able to effectively record, by means of an attendance note, key information obtained when interviewing witnesses
  • Delegates are able to demonstrate the key skills used in drafting witness statements
  • Demonstrate the key skills used in drafting Delegates are able to demonstrate the key skills used in drafting letters instructing experts
